BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

Welcome to the Student to Industry Program (SIP) website.

SIP is a non-for-profit organisation that has been active in the ACT community for 13 years.

SIP works will all ACT secondary schools, as well as many businesses and industry bodies, educational organisations, and community groups, and is committed to providing better outcomes for all.

In 2010 there will be some exciting changes to come for SIP, with many new opportunities being created. In previous years SIP has worked as part of the Career Advice Australia (CAA) program of the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). Under this arrangement SIP was a Local Community Partnership (LCP) funded to provide career and transition support and education to people aged 13-19 in the ACT.

SIP continues to create successful and sustainable partnerships between industry and businesses, education and the community creating mutually beneficial outcomes. Over the years SIP has built and maintained relationships with a range of businesses, peak industry bodies, and community and education organisations.

SIP develops activities and projects that give business and industry the opportunity to mentor and engage with students, influencing the skills and knowledge of the future workforce.

In 2009 SIP linked businesses to more than 8,000 students through programs and activities tailored to the needs and capacity of the business(es) and school(s) involved.

"The relationship we've built with schools is a good recruitment tool for us, it helps us market our facilities as well, and that's a really big benefit for the club," Michael Rennick, Human Resources Manager for the Canberra Southern Cross Club said. The Club has been involved in a number of SIP activities, from mentoring in major hospitality projects to taking students for work placements.

SIP recognises the importance of promoting industries, especially those with skills shortages and foreshadowed shortages, and has incorporated this into its role in the ACT. SIP does this through assisting in the promotion of events, opportunities for students, courses, jobs, and traineeships across a range of fields.

The Student to Industry Progam's new direction will allow SIP to engage in stronger mutually supportive partnerships with businesses and industry. Businesses and industry are encouraged to work closely with SIP in forming its new direction. Please contact SIP manager, Trish Mooney, to discuss ideas and possibilities:
